Peter Walsh, Elizabeth Garnsey, and John Kennedy explain the importance of these two events being sandwiched together, how this story is a joining of Jesus' power and compassion, and what this reveals about the impoverished and the privileged.

    The woman had been ill for 12 years…the girl is 12 years of age both are “at the point of death” Jairus requests that Jesus comes both mother and father are brought into the room. Might this be a healing of both mother and daughter? If so, an entire family is restored.

    “as He was" Is this a reference to Jesus’ human nature? A furious squall...a bad storm...happens. The boat suffers simply because it's there. Jesus does not explain each wave...yet He weeps with those who weep. The disciples’ response “We are being destroyed NOW!” Jesus appears to be asleep at the wheel...”we're perishing!”…Jesus included...’it matters to you that we’re perishing’…expecting a positive answer... “Shut up! Be muzzeled!” is rude language, but it's the enemy...even the grave and the jaws of death are shut up for you...Jesus speaks with authority...Jesus doesn’t just grab a bucket, he goes to the source of the problem... Faith prays...because it knows nothing else...like the infant to her mother There is no better place to be than next to Jesus asleep in His sleep over death...especially in the midst of unfathanal circumstances the Lord does his best work. BTW - the St. Mark ties are wonderful! Received mine for Father’s Day

    To Elizabeth, Jerome C. W. Halverson living in the state of Minnesota. The sermon Nothing Ordinary About Ordinary Time was a real excellent sermon. As all the sermons that you spoke to the St. Marks Episcopal Church, all of the sermons that I heard that you spoke out were excellent, including this one. I am going real good today. I remembered I gave you a Russian recipe. The recipe for Russian Meatballs. I am part Russian. I have some ancestors who came from the country of Russia. I am part Russian. I remembered I gave to you the Russian Meatballs recipe - a Russian recipe. How about another Russian recipe?!! This recipe is a Russian recipe, and it is fish soup. Or 'Ukha'. Now, if you don't know how to speak the Russian language, you will know of one word said in Russian. The word 'ukha', pronounced ūk hã, - the word 'ukha' is 'fish soup' in the Russian language. This recipe is a Russian recipe. This easy recipe was First Made in the country of Russia. UKHA 4 cups water 2 potatoes, cubed 1 onion, chopped 1 bunch fresh parsley 4 ounces cod fillets, cubed Lemon juice from one lemon Salt to taste Pepper to taste Put water in large saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Add cubed potatoes, chopped onions and chopped parsley. Heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Add cod fillets. Heat 10 more minutes, then squeeze in lemon juice from one lemon and season with salt and pepper. Ukha is 'fish soup' in the Russian language. This is an easy Russian recipe. Recipe was First Made in the country of Russia. Ukha. Have a great day.

    Technically no sins are forgiven in Christianity. They are transacted, meaning someone else pays the penalty. Which according to actual justice doesn't happen because it would be meaningless. In true forgiveness the warrant for restitution is waived, not otherwise satisfied. Mercy is the vehicle for the higher priority of reconciliation in true forgiveness. The biblical god knows nothing of this.

    • @ElizabethGarnsey

      Thank you for listening and commenting. In my reading of the Gospels, I’m finding that one of the most radical and uncomfortable realities about God’s forgiveness is that it is so freely offered.

    'Catholic Record' September 1 1923 "Sunday is our voice [MARK] of authority....The church is above the bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact." ☝️ Blasphemy! Protestants who claim to keep Sunday holy are wondering after the beast and your claim of sola scriptura is made in vain. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, *and think to change times and laws* and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. {Daniel 7:25}

    -- "On the day of preperation, at the hour of dinner, there came out pursuers and horsemen" and Polycarp was killed "on *the great day of the Sabbath* at the eighth hour" (The encyclical epistle of the church at Smyrna, the Martyrdom of Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna. Verses 7.1 & 8.1 Charles H. Hoole's 1885 translation.) -- "Again as to the assertion that Sabbath has been abolished. We deny that He has abolished it plainly; for He was Himself Lord of the Sabbath." (Archelaus c. 3rd century.) -- "Gnostic 8th day Origins" "They affirm that man was formed on the eighth day, for sometimes they will have him been made on the sixth day, and sometimes on the eighth, unless perchance they mean that the earthly part was formed on the sixth day, but his fleshly part on the eighth, for these two things are distinguished by them." (Irenaeus of Lyons c. 2nd century.) -- The Gnostic "Eight Day" origins of Sunday rest. "But the works of the Nicolaitans in that time were false and troublesome men, who, as ministers under the name of Nicholas, had made for themselves a hersey, to the effect that what might be offered to Idols might be exorcised and eaten, and whoever should have committed fornication might receive peace on the eighth day." (Victorinious of Pettau c. 3rd century.) -- "For almost all the churches throughout the world celebrate the mysteries on the Sabbath of every week, yet the Christians of *Alexandria and Rome* on account of some *ancient tradition* cease to do this." (Socrates Scholasticus c. 380 - 439 A.D.) -- "There are many here among us now, who fast on the same day as the Jews, [Rome made the Sabbath day a fast] and keep the Sabbaths in the same mannor." (John Chrysostom c. 339 - 407 A.D.) -- 'Primitive Christianity' Athanasius Bishop of Alexandria tells us that "They assemble on Saturday, not that they are infected with Judaism, but only to worship Christ the Lord of the Sabbath" (Pseudo Athanasius; William Cave c. 1676) -- "Thus Christ did not at all rescind the Sabbath, He kept the law thereof.....even in the case before us He fulfilled the law while interpreting its condition; moreover, He exhibits in a clear light the different kinds of work, while doing what the law excepts from the sacredness of the Sabbath and while imparting to the Sabbath itself, which from the beginning had been consecrated by the Benediction of the Father. An additional sanctity by His own Beneficent action. For He furnished to this day divine safeguards..... *a course which His adversary would have pursued for some other days, to avoid honouring the Creator's Sabbath* and restoring to the Sabbath the works which were proper for it." (3rd century Tertillian on the Sabbath.) *Council of Laodicea* canon 29 A.D. 363 "Christians must not Judaize by resting on the sabbath day, but must work on that day, rather honoring --the Lord's Day-- [Sun-day] and, if they can, resting as Christians. But if they they shall be found to be Judaizers, let them be an anathema from Christ." ^ Proof that true Christianity still remembered the sabbath day, to keep it Holy, even in the fourth century A.D.

    I have heard from different sources that the Sabbath is still Saturday for Christians but the Christian Great Thanksgiving is Sunday, like we have 2 days? Then I have others say no, the Sabbath was moved for Christians to Sunday? Very confused. What is it for Episco/Anglican folk?

    • @ElizabethGarnsey
      @ElizabethGarnsey 18 днів тому

      The Episcopal Church generally understands that the early churches abandoned celebration of the Jewish Sabbath with all of its restrictions, and instead emphasized observance of the Lord’s Day, or the “Third Day”, or the “First Day of the Week,” all of which are ways of referring to the day of Resurrection. This is our primary day of worship and is always Easter in miniature. We don’t observe a sabbath day per se, except in this way of celebrating the resurrection every Sunday. That said, there have been many Christian variations on a Sabbath Day (Shakers, Quakers, Amish, Puritans, etc…) that have more resembled strict reading of Old Testament Sabbath laws. Thanks for listening and commenting!

    Thank you! I, too, appreciate the point that the Pharisees might not be criminally selfish attention seekers, but people who are serious about serving God in the way that they believe is right. The mistake, perhaps for all of us, is when we believe that we are the only ones who have it right and can’t learn anything from anyone outside the group. I always love the way you two/three play off of each other’s ideas. That is the very best of conversations! P.S.: Rob ALWAYS has the right tee shirt for the day!

    Elizabeth said, at 9:28 "you either get it or you don't". This is why we need to continue to study scripture and why it speaks to us in a different way each time. The Holy Spirit is something to experience. The Trinity is all about experience. Years back when I began seminary I preached on Trinity Sunday and used a tricycle to "explain" the Trinity. I no longer attempt to explain it rather I inform of the Trinity , and concentrate how the Holy Spirit is at work among us. Peace.

    To Elizabeth, It's Jerome C. W. Halverson from the state of Minnesota. I listened to the sermon that you said to the people at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church on the 12th of May of this year. Excellent sermon.Very Excellent. I think you are a good pastor, along with Pete Walsh and John Kennedy, I think you three are three good pastors. Very excellent sermons. I get the sermons by way of You Tube. Now, I like this - Buffalo meat! Do you like Buffalo meat? I live in the state of Minnesota and I always live in the state of Minnesota for all my life. By the way, I am 61 years old. The state of Minnesota had buffaloes. During the years 1800s bullalo were seen on the prairies of Minnesota. Right now a person can still see a buffalo in areas of the state of Minnesota. Buffalo meat was a traditional meat source for the earliest residents of the state of Minnesota. Do you like buffalo meat? I like buffalo meat - and I live in the state of Minnesota. This is a Minnesota recipe. This recipe was First Made in the state of Minnesota. MINNESOTA BUFFALO MEAT LOAF 1 pound ground buffalo meat 1 egg 1/5 cup milk 1 cup bread crumbs Garlic and onion powder to taste Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray meat loaf pan with non - stick spray. Combine all ingredients and cook at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or a bit longer to your liking. Simular to Meat Loaf, but the meat is Buffalo Meat. This is a Minnesota recipe. First Made somewhere in the state of Minnesota. Minnesota Buffalo Meat Loaf. Have a great day.

    Am grateful for be😢😢ing able to experience Marcel Proust's "second life," which for him was shorthand for the literaey re--presentation of even the most trivial of originary events that speed by us 24/7. Except: the originary overcoming of "the world," and, the realistic hope that the "Sting" (cap S) of death will eventually be removed; that all tears will be wiped away. NOT trivial. Read: Three Easter Sundays. Amen! When an Anglican service is only a minutes' walk from where I stayed or lived. Or when I see one on my YT feed: I stand at attention. I attend if at all possible. Thank ya'll that I can count 100% on a fine organ, a sanctuary worthy of the name. A lectionary that prevents undue preachiness, cherry picking of the word. So many yummy nuggets here. I love your But Wait! There’s more! Bits that keep adding layers to the conversation. I’m with you, Peter, if I’m understanding you correctly. I have found that throughout the Bible it isn’t the details of the stories that matters, it’s that the stories exist at all with undeniably similar details. Your example, Peter, of the retelling of the events in Jennifer’s high school class is perfect for this. These stories were written through many years and predominantly, I think, written from oral history. Thinking along these lines, I have no problem accepting them in faith that all the stories contain an essential truth. Don’t know if I’m making sense, but that’s my thinking and, for now, I’m sticking with it. 😊

    Grateful, a lot, for this rigorous focus on Barth. Am coming from two, at first blush, disparate disciplines. PhD in Comparative Literature, which morphed into its current form (in GB and the US...not so much in Canada(!) ) Then it got rebranded into the more glorious nomenclature of "Comp Lit." R U sitting down? Am also a Mormon, aka member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Yes. An unwieldy title. But one that does us the service of putting the differentiating, rather scandalous claim in concise, transparent terms. I first came into contact with Barth in his role of mover and shaker, along with D. Bonhoeffer, of the Confessing Church--as opposed to the National Church of Germany. I admired and identified with Herrn Dr. Barth quickly when confronted with his concept of "The Whole-ly Other." Shouldn't we all...each for different reasons? Of course. But ya'all beat me to the punch right as I was drafting the above. Barth is to be respected for siding with the Confessing Church--while his own brothers, the Reformed Calvinist-Huguenot refugees from death edicts, etc.--were radicalizing themselves. German people and the German states had both shown lavish hospitaly to this cohort of refugees. These, then, could hardly wait to sign the requisite pledge to Hitler and to "Addie H'' brave-new State "Evangelische" Kirche. Draw whatever conclusion you will. Mine is that "ascetic" ressentiment dies hard. Trust you good people to know this lingua franca; devised by the German son-of-a-preacher-man, by one who did his PhD in the future Karl Barth's home town of Basel, and who went by the nom de plume "Der Gekreuzigte" during the purported descent into madness. My own, I hope, less obvious ssessment is the perception of a pattern wherever the strong form of Calvin went. An ordinary Brit quipped only a few months back how England, Scotland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, somewhat or a lot, distanced themselves away from Calvin in favor of other reformers. Among these are especially Zwingly. But also Luther, Hus (!) and the Wesley brothers. The quip/joke was "We sent the convicts to Australia and the Puritans to America. America got the raw end of the deal." I had and have no axe to grind, no chip on my shoulder. Nope. I cling to you, your, mine, our, Jesus's, God's "universal church." If we are not against each other, we are for each other. The most radical of all teachers said that. Of course. To me it's the gift that keeps on giving! The name of said gift? "Peace on Earth. Good will [unto] all Men(schen)." You will recognize my interpolation of Luther's translation, with a dative plural that implies [unto] in English. Yes I know: that silly German to Anglo-Saxon pun, which takes reductive account of all those linear or shelve feet denouncing "men" as being replete with toxic masculinity--whatever that is. So I witness 😂 Peace out, Mark, Arizona

      Thank you, Mark, for sharing the unique path you've been called down and for bringing your diverse experiences to the conversation. Barth certainly gives us a lot to discuss and break down!

    A follow up to references to Genesis and this text. In John Jesus is buried in a garden. He comes to the disciples “in the cool of the day” in the evening. Instead of asking “where are you?” (Genesis 3) He responds, “peace to you.” We are enjoying these podcasts from Indiana!

    To Elizabeth, It's Jerome C. W. Halverson living in the state of Minnesota. I have listen to this sermon about foot washing, real excellent sermon. Thumbs up! Real excellent sermon. A few days I listened to A few sermons from St. Mark's Episcopal Church by Pete Walsh and by John Kennedy, which I assumed that it is a different man named John Kennedy and not the President Of The United States John Kennedy. I was not surprised to find out the President Of The United States John Kennedy is now the pastor of the St. Marks Episcopal Church. When I read John Kennedy the first thing that I figured was a different man named John Kennedy. I also listened to a couple sermons that you said to the people of the church, 'Litany Again' and 'Fever Medicine' and today I listened to the sermon 'Remember Our Remembering' These were real excellent sermons. I remember the last message I gave you a Russian recipe. Russian Meatballs. How about another recipe! This recipe is an Australian recipe. This recipe was First Made in the country of Australia. AUSTRALIAN FLANK STEAK 1/2 pound brown sugar 4 to 6 drops liquid smoke 2/3 teaspoon concentrated lemon juice 1/2 garlic clove, slice 1 flank steak To brown sugar, add liquid smoke, lemon juice, garlic, and enough barbecue sauce to dissolve brown sugar. I have started writing my sermon and am focusing on breath. I am planning to have a few moments of silence in worship , encouraging the congregation to focus on their breath, to focus on breathing in and out. I plan to discuss significance of breath in various faith traditions and how so many find peace in meditation and focus on breath. Could that be becasue breath is Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit calms. I draw on the connections to Genesis.
